The sides and top frame of the box are made from Western Australian Jarrah. Those of you in London may be interested to know that you actually have some of this in the London Underground as railway sleepers. It's hard and durable, but also quite beautiful. Jarrah is a gum tree (Eucalyptus marginata). The top insert is a piece of Tasmanian Myrtle and is a temperate rainforest understory tree. It's not related to real Myrtle in any way, but then a lot of Aussie timbers are named after European and American timbers even though they're not related. The botanical name for Tasmanian Myrtle is Nothofagus cunninghamii. It is not a Eucalypt. |
