REG has commemorated the special occasion with a tweet. Richard E. Grant, who is famed for his starring role in Withnail & I, is a keen supporter of the celebration, which takes place across the world today. Richard tweeted:

“INTL Women’s Day! Women rule my world. Hurry up and rule the rest. Equal pay. Equal rights. Equal everything. You already know my PM choice” tweeted the star, who received 163 retweets for the sentiment.

The celebrity Twitterverse have gathered together to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Taking a break from her hectic Britain And Ireland’s Next Top Model judging schedule, Dannii Minogue also tweeted her support for the event.

“Happy International Womens Day to all my lovely ladies. Tweet ‘what it means to be a woman’ at 3.30pm today for #WIEshare”

Queen Rania of Jordan also offered her praise for the day.

“Happy International Women’s Day! Let us celebrate how far we have come and remember how much more we still have to offer #IWD.”

And for plenty of stars, the day warranted some fun celebrations.

“International Women’s Day! Chocolate for everyone!” joked Radio 1 DJ Jameela Jamil.

Although only popular in recent years, the first national women’s day was celebrated in 1908 in America. The international celebration came into force in 1977 as a UN initiative.

This is the first of two special days for British ladies this week. Celebrities and the public have struck lucky as they partake in mother’s day celebrations on Sunday.
