The Scarlet Pimpernel

April24

Drama (Scarlet Pimpernel / Sir Percy Blakeney)

REG leads a double life as the daring Scarlet Pimpernel – A crack shot, accomplished horseman – and the foppish English aristocrat Sir Percy Blakeney – one of the richest men in England. While the Pimpernel swashbuckles and romances his way through the bloodiest days of revolutionary France with his faithful followers – the League of Gentlemen – Sir Percy is every bit the upper-class toff back in England.

Elizabeth McGovern is Sir Percy’s beautiful French wife Marguerite, who suspects his dark secret and will risk anything to save him from exposure. Martin Shaw is Chauvelin, the head of the revolutionary secret police and the Pimpernel’s sworn enemy.

The Portrait Of A Lady

April24

Drama (Lord Warburton)

A very emotionally intense period drama, directed by Jane Campion. Set in 1872, the costumes are gorgeous and it’s a real visual treat.

The film narrates the story of a strong, graceful and naive young American, played by Nicole Kidman, who is unexpectedly given a fortune by an ailing cousin and decides to use it to experience the world. She is courted by three eligible suitors, but she spurns them and heads for Italy, where she meets the slimy and oppressive Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich), who seduces her for her money. REG has a small, but very good part as Lord Warburton, one of her most ardent suitors.

Best REG line: You’re sacrificing your health to your curiosity.

The Player

April24

Comedy (Tom Oakley)

Tim Robbins plays a paranoid young movie executive who is threatened by a disgruntled screenwriter – until he begins taking the law into his own hands. It’s a biting examination of Hollywood’s greed and power, directed by Robert Altman. This marks the first time REG got to work with him, the second time being in Prêt-à-Porter. This is a great film, very clever and well written. I enjoyed it immensely. REG plays Tom Oakley, a schmoosey writer/producer who pitches a ridiculous idea for a movie, along with his “partner” Andy Civella, played by Dean Stockwell.

Best REG line: This story is too damned important to risk being overwhelmed by personality.
