Fun With Babelfish & REG

July26

Trawling through the internet last night I happened to check out some of the Japanese REG sites (through the Babelfish.com translator) and had a bit of a chuckle at some of the things I found.

Now obviously the Babelfish translator isn’t foolproof (what translator is?) and there are just some things that won’t translate too well into English, but some of the stuff does bring a smile to one’s face – in particular the following titles for some of REG’s movies.

Crimson Carry (The Scarlet Pimpernel) – Well scarlet, crimson, purple…..It’s all much of a muchness, isn’t it? I wonder what he’s supposed to be carrying though?

Oral Attaching Of Demon (The Serpent’s Kiss) – Yeah well….The “oral attaching” part works for me….and a serpent could be a demon I suppose, couldn’t it?

Abnormal Crime Psychological Investigation (The Cold Light Of Day) – This hits the nail on the head. That’s what the film was all about after all – though the title itself is a little dry.

The Method Of Succeeding In Announcement Industry (How To Get Ahead In Advertising) – Once again, can’t fault it. The advertising industry is an announcement industry after all – even if the title loses that “get ahead = get a head” angle.

L. A. The Town Where The Story/Love Falls (L.A. Story) – Well, it is in L.A. and it is a love story of sorts?

Nile Of Love And Ambition (Mountains Of The Moon) – There’s ambition, there’s love and there’s the Nile. What more do you want?

The websites themselves were great. One of the websites in particular, http://torajima.fc2web.com/home.htm, was quite well laid out and interesting – a fount of knowledge for Japanese speaking fans, I would think. I also suspect that a great deal of the information at the site is translated from the REG Temple itself, but any site that bestows the virtues of REG’s wonderful talents has the thumbs up from here at the Temple. Getting the REG word out needs to be encouraged!

The reference to the REG Temple “ill-smelling” though was a little unusual? But then the whole passage was a little bewildering. It reads:

THE REG TEMPLE
Richard English E Grant official sight
From REG up-to-date information, to the photograph it is quantity, ill-smelling it is.
Because it is official, there is also information from main person of REG, because (you cannot read the curator, you heard in purple)

I just put that all down to bad translation on Babelfish’s part :-) I hope that’s all it is?

That’s my story anyway!

For those of you wishing to look at non-English REG websites you can find the Babelfish translator here.

In my haste to announce the new sections to the site the other day I forgot to actually upload the “Charity” section! Not that there’s anything much up there at the moment, but still. Apologies for that.

The three pieces that are up there in the “Charity” section at the moment were sent to me by Valerie (“Alone In London”) and SueW. (“Outline An Orchid” & “Signature Flowers”). Thanks guys.

REG On Fatherhood

July25

Jolie sent me an article from UK’s “You Magazine”, dated 1993. The article (actually I think it’s a snippet from a larger article) features Richard and Olivia and talks about Richard’s role as a father. There’s a few very cute pics included in the article as well, and you can read and see here.

Legally Blonde 2 UK Premiere

July24

Thursday 24th July 2003

Reese blooming at premiere

Taken from the femail.co.uk website, but possibly likely to have originated from The Evening Standard or the Empire Online site.

Reese Witherspoon was in full bloom at the UK premiere of her latest blockbuster film Legally Blonde 2, in London last night.

The American actress, who is the star and executive producer of the sequel, arrived at Warner Village West End Cinema in Leicester Square, with her husband Ryan Phillippe.

Dressed in a white Prada maternity dress and red sash, the 27-year-old said: “It’s great for me because I’m a mother and it’s a great film for young women. The character is glamorous, fun, but she’s also very serious about her career. She loves bringing a new perspective to very traditional careers.”

It was Witherspoon’s debut as executive producer of her film and she said she was similar to Elle Woods, the character she plays in Legally Blonde 2.

The first movie dealt with stereotyping. This movie carries on that message and tells people you cannot judge a book by its cover.”

Asked whether blondes have more fun, she replied: “I don’t have a comparison as I have only ever been blonde.”

First trip to the UK

Witherspoon, who has a three-year-old daughter and is expecting her second child in December, said it was great to be in London for the premiere.

“It’s great to be here. I have never been to the UK before. I’m just glad it didn’t rain.” She said she was currently filming a new movie, Vanity Fair, just outside London and would be returning to America once filming had finished.

Asked about a third Legally Blonde film, she added: “I’ll have to see if people like the second. I don’t really know.”

Star-studded guests

Among the star-studded guest list for the premiere were Richard E Grant, Girls Aloud, The Cheeky Girls, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Kym Marsh.

Richard E Grant attended the premiere with his family and said Elle Woods represented a new form of feminism where girls did not have to burn their bras.

Grant said: “She’s a generation after the people who burnt their bras, my generation. Now you can have your bra and still get paid millions for a movie.”

Grant, who said he met Witherspoon while working on Gosford Park with her husband, said she was a great icon for “girl power”. “She’s all that,” he said. “She’s worth all the money that they pay her.”

He admitted to watching Legally Blonde 10 times because his daughters (sic) were such big fans. Many of the stars paid tribute to the evening by wearing pink.

Singer Kym Marsh admitted she had chosen to wear a pink top especially for the event. She said: “I dressed in pink especially and I cannot wait to see the movie.”

The director, Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, said of Elle Woods: “It’s really what she does, not what she wears in the end. You don’t have to give that up in order to conquer the world. You can look good and wear fabulous shoes and she is still successful and that’s very important.”

Ditzy-blonde

Witherspoon plays the pink-loving blonde who conquered Harvard Law School in the first film, Legally Blonde, and in the sequel is now a rising young lawyer at a top firm. The film picks up with Elle juggling a demanding job with preparation for her wedding to the man of her dreams.

But, when she finds out that her beloved dog Bruiser’s family members are being used as cosmetic test subjects by one of her firm’s own clients, she stands up for their rights and is promptly fired. She then tries to get US Congress to pass a bill banning animal testing.

Commenting on her own success as an actress and the comparisons made between her and Julia Roberts, she added: “I don’t think it’s a competition at all you know. I think Julia Roberts is doing fine and I’m doing fine and you know I think if one woman is doing well I think it’s good for all women so I’m happy for her and me.”

She also said she would love to do a film with her husband.

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde is released in the UK on August 1.

New Sections & Additional Buttons

July24

Some of you may, or may not, have noticed that there were a couple of slight changes to the navigation bar at the bottom of the site, and the addition of extra buttons. One of the buttons is for the new REG Temple online store which opened for business the other day. It just makes it a bit easier for people to navigate to.

The second is for another new section that’s going up shortly, detailing the various charities and charity events that REG has participated in. I hope to have at least some of that section on the site within the next few days. Yeah, I know! The type font for the new buttons isn’t quite there yet but, so far, I haven’t been able to find the right font just yet. I’ll fix it up when I do find it :-)

There’s also a new “Auction” section awaiting in the wings as I speak. This will primarily be for people wanting to part with various REG items and collectibles that they no longer have a need for (as well as for those people wanting to add to their REG collections).

And I uploaded a few more images to the “Pictures” section the other day and I’ve received about 15 or 20 more just in the last couple of days which I’ll upload soon. As always, stay tuned!
