Withnail Number 15 In Greatest Movie Drunks? Is That A Typo?

November11

TotalFilm.com – 11th November, 2011

For some bizarre reason Richard E. Grant’s portrayal of Withnail only ranks number 15 in TotalFilm.com’s list of 50 Greatest Movie Drunks. The site goes on to say that:

“Withnail lives on a diet of booze and pills. Which understandably makes him into something of a hot-blooded chap, though he’s got the heart of a poet.”

As far as the tipple of choice goes, the site adds “Any tipple will do. Especially when paired up with pills.”

At the end of the day I suppose it’s better to be included in the list than to miss out completely. Then again we do tend to be a little biased here at The Temple.

To see the other top 50 movie drunks just go to TotalFilm.com.

We also have the dramatic full length UK movie trailer for the Margaret Thatcher biopic “The Iron Lady”, starring two time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as the controversial former British Prime Minister and Conservative party leader.

The film is directed by “Mamma Mia!” director Phyllida Lloyd and also stars Jim Broadbent, Anthony Head, Alexandra Roach, Harry Lloy, Richard E Grant, Olivia Colman, Roger Allam, Nicholas Farrell, Susan Brown, Julian Wadham, Pip Torrens, Nick Dunning, John Sessions, David Westhead and Angus Wright.

“The Iron Lady” is released across the US from December 30th, and the UK from January 6th, 2012. It is a look at the life of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, with a focus on the price she paid for power.

Richard E. Grant To Appear In Remake Of Aussie Cult Horror Classic?

November6

6th November, 2011

OK, well this could all end up in the “Non-Starters” category, and I will email REG to see if he knows anything about it (I couldn’t find anything else online when I checked) but TwitchFilm.com has reported that Richard E. Grant will star in the remake of Aussie cult horror classic “Patrick”, alongside Rachel Griffiths (yay!) and lead, Sharni Vinson (from Aussie soap “Home & Away”).

Of course this all depends on financing which, let’s face it, has sunk many a film project in the past. Anyhow, Todd Brown from TwitchFilm.com reports:

“While producers continue piecing together the financing for Mark (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed) Hartley’s long gestating remake of Australian cult classic horror film Patrick, the project has taken a big step forward with some significant cast attachments.

The story of a young man, seemingly catatonic but gifted with powerful psychokinetic abilities, there is not yet word on who will play the title character but You’re Next star Sharni Vinson has been attached to play the lead role of a young nurse who cares for Patrick in hospital while Richard E Grant and Rachel Griffiths will also star as senior hospital administration.

While mainstream audiences have yet to see Vinson’s performance in You’re Next it was hailed as a star making turn here, and this will certainly be a step in that direction.”

I must say it feels a bit like deja vu, as I recall Richard being “cast” in The Surgeon about half a dozen years ago – a film which, when asked, REG had no knowledge of. That doesn’t mean that this is not a real production of course, and I will endeavor to check with REG to see if he knows anything about this one.

As always, stay tuned…

Johnny Depp Thinks Withnail And I Is Perfect Cinema

November3

www.film-news.co.uk – 3rd November, 2011

It’s true! Johnny Depp admires Withnail & I.

The Hollywood star is a huge fan of the 1987 movie, which stars Richard E. Grant. It’s about two out-of-work actors who decide to go on a holiday, and is famed for its witty dialogue. Johnny can quote reams of the script and thinks everyone should watch the movie.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” he replied, when asked if Withnail inspired his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow. “But Withnail, for me, is as good as cinema gets. It has every aspect you want. It’s hysterically funny, immensely quotable and there’s a great gravity to it as well. It’s a very poetic film. For me, it’s in the top three of all time.”

Johnny’s new movie is The Rum Diary, based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson.

Withnail & I director Bruce Robinson helmed the picture, and Johnny was thrilled when he signed on.

Bruce hadn’t directed a picture for 19 years previously, and the actor has explained how he convinced him to make a comeback.

“I was a real pest,” he laughed to Shortlist magazine. “I just kept coming at him. I understand someone who makes that decision and says, ‘I’m done with this cinema game and all those nasty bits that come with it,’ but Bruce was my dream for The Rum Diary and he was Hunter’s too. So I had to pursue him until he kicked me in the mid-section.”

Standard Bank’s new crop of artists

By Christina Kennedy.

Thirty years ago Richard E Grant (born Esterhuysen) was among the winners of the first Young Artist Award, sponsored in those days by Five Roses. The Swaziland-born actor has since become a stalwart of the international indie cinema scene, earning plaudits for films such as the cult classic Withnail and I and the upstairs-downstairs ensemble drama Gosford Park.

Last night, a fresh new crop of Young Artists was crowned at Johannesburg’s edgy inner-city arts hub of Arts on Main, and will no doubt be hoping that similar bright lights await them.

Sponsored by Standard Bank since 1984, the awards are presented every year by the National Arts Festival in recognition of bubbling-under talent in various disciplines. The recipients are often on the cusp of national recognition and fame, or have already started making an impression on the arts scene and need an extra boost to propel their careers into the stratosphere.

The 2012 Standard Bank Young Artists are Kelebogile (Pearl) Boikanyo for music; Michael Subotzky for visual art; Princess Zinzi Mhlongo for theatre; Bailey Snyman for dance; and Afrika Mkhize for jazz.

You can read more about the latest winners of Young Artist Award at the BusinessDay.co.za website

Updates on The Rum Diary

There’s also a couple of articles on the new Bruce Robinson film, The Rum Diary, which you can read here and here, and an article on Richmond (where REG lives) from The Sofia Echo which you can read here.
